Recently Oregon jumped on the bandwagon and passed the law prohibiting of talking on the cell phone while driving. The TomTom GPS / Hands Free calling iPhone kit came to the rescue.

The design and thought that went into every aspect of the dock should be praised. From the built in microphone and speaker, Bluetooth pairing, assisted GPS signal boost, audio out and mounting system, it passes the test strongly. Even the little dock connector is spring loaded to allow for easy docking.

Sound quality while driving is solid on my end, the other end said they could hear me just fine although you do get the “You sound like you are in a barrel” comment.

The iPhone TomTom GPS software is also great. Very very simple to use and blows away most gps units because of the responsiveness of the iphone’s touch screen combined with the simple and sweet UI.

Next will be hooking up the dock to my AUX port in my truck to have an all in one GPS, Phone & Media player unit.

The only downside to the dock would be the swivel joint. While it works well, it tends to feel a bit loose and you can hear it rattle a bit when the iPhone is rotated to certain angles.

Overall I would recommend the unit. Even though the price of both dock and software may seem steep at first (around $200 for both), is well worth it considering it’s closeness in price to a GPS stand alone unit combined with the ability to have an all in one device with all in one functionality.

Currently it is back-ordered on most all sites but can be found, for a price, on ebay.
